Roll a 6 to move one token from your home base onto the starting square. Rolling a 6 also gives you an extra turn. You must roll a 6 before any of your tokens can begin the race.
Move tokens clockwise around the board's outer path according to your dice roll. Tokens move through the safe path leading to the home column of their colour before entering the finishing triangle.
Starred squares on the board are safe — no token can be captured while standing on a safe square. Use safe squares strategically when opponent tokens are in dangerous proximity.
Land on a square occupied by an opponent's token (not on a safe square) to send it back to their home base. Capturing grants an extra turn. This is one of the most powerful strategic levers in the game.
Be the first player to get all four tokens into the home triangle at the centre of the board. Each token must land on the finishing square by exact count — you cannot overshoot the home column.
Ludo Strategy — Think Beyond the Dice
The decisions that separate consistent winners from occasional lucky players.
Avoid rushing a single token far ahead of the others. A distributed formation gives you more options on each roll and limits the damage from any single capture.
When you have the option to either advance your own token or capture an opponent's, capturing is often the stronger play — especially in the mid-game when positions are competitive.
Two tokens on the same square form a block. Position blocks on the path ahead of a leading opponent token to freeze their progress while you catch up.

In 4-player games, bringing new tokens out immediately on a 6 is not always the best play. Sometimes advancing an existing token that is already in a strong position is more valuable.
When you have tokens close to finishing, protect them aggressively. A late-game capture can reverse an almost-certain victory — this is when safe squares become most valuable.
